Millsboro, DE – Phyllis Christine Mayer O’Connor, 89 of Schenectady, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and love, with confidence in the grace of Christ, on January 17, 2018.
Phyllis was born in Schenectady, NY on December 8, 1928 to Katherine Pauline Gonscar Mayer and John James Mayer. She graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1947 and worked for the Maqua Company as a young woman. She married Gerald O’Connor and lovingly raised five children. For years she worked as a manager at Glennpeter Jewelers in Schenectady.
She lived her life devoted to her family. Phyllis was very active in leadership of the Girl Scouts while her husband did the same for the Boy Scouts. They were an all “scouting family”. Phyllis loved singing in the Church Choirs of St. Thomas and St. Helens in Schenectady, and then St. John the Evangelist in Maryland. She was an active member for over 30 years combined with the River Valley Chorus in Schenectady and the Harbor City Music Show Chorus in Elkridge, Maryland. She became the family historian holding her family ever in her heart and binding them together with picture collages right up to the her last moments. Phyllis aged with a grace and sweetness that made her loved by all.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Gerald Francis O’Connor and her brother John D. Mayer. She is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Trinitas Mayer, S.A. and her three sons and two daughters; Lawrence J. (Donna) of Delanson, NY, Thomas G. (Mary) of Getzville, NY, Timothy P. (Mary) of Lanoka Harbor, NJ, Cathryn A. (Charles) Gibson of Millsboro, DE and Mary Clare (Steven Kowalski) of Schenectady. Phyllis and Gerald have 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday January 24th from 5 to 7 PM at the De Legge Funeral Home, 1346 Chrisler Avenue, Schenectady. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 25, at 8:45 am from the DeLegge Funeral Home followed by a mass of Christian burial 9:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Schenectady NY.
