In the early hours of September 10th, 2025, Kenneth Donald Hunter, 82, of Mechanicville, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Kenneth Hunter was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Christine Hunter, and doting father to sons Jeffrey, Paul, and Brian and daughter Lisa Hunter.
Ken Hunter was born in Troy, NY and spent his youth growing up in Colonie, NY, graduating from Colonie High School. Ken held multiple odd jobs out of school, including a bartending stint at Harold’s Office, prior to starting a career in printing that spanned more than 35 years. He then began a late second career at the NYS Department of Transportation that lasted an additional 14 years, acting primarily as an equipment purchaser for the Department. Ken spent most of his life raising his family in Schenectady, NY, before eventually retiring to Mechanicville, NY after his working career.
Ken was an avid follower of the NY Giants football team and was happy to sport his loyalty through various cups and mugs or clothes throughout the fall and winter months. In his younger years, Ken owned and kept a stable of two horses and enjoyed horseback riding as a past time recreational activity. For his leisure time, he loved spending it with family and friends, through the holidays and on adventurous vacations. Whether they were in the Adirondacks camping on Schroon Lake, on the ocean shores of NJ and throughout the east coast, or tropical trips to the Caribbean or Hawaii, Ken enjoyed the outdoors. On any normal day, he took pride in maintaining his yard and looking after his home and family.
In his retirement he enjoyed going to an occasional car show, or reading through various car magazines, and loved looking after his Ford Mustang. He was a 60-year card carrying member of the Watervliet-Colonie Elks Lodge, following in the footsteps of his cousin Ronald Lamont, and his father Leonard Hunter, as well as other friends and family members. Ken also enjoyed frequenting his favorite local spots such as Mangino’s Restaurant on Saratoga Lake for many an enjoyable anniversary dinner with his wife of 46 years, Christine.
Ken had an adoration for life and a lively spirit that was appreciated by all those who knew him best. He was a determined and faithful person and remained loyal to his church, family, friends and all his commitments throughout his life. Despite later health obstacles, Ken remained steadfast and determined to live with a spirit that never wavered, and his resilience was revered as much as his enthusiasm toward all life has to offer.
Ken is mourned by his faithful wife Christine, and sons Jeffrey (Andrea), Paul and Brian, daughter Lisa Hunter, sister Patricia Santandrea (Bernard), sister-in-law Helen McLea, and several nieces and nephews, and lifelong, loyal friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his father Leonard, mother, Hannah, and brother James Hunter (Pamela).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours on Tuesday, September 16, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m at the DeLegge Funeral Home, 1346 Chrisler Ave., Schenectady, NY 12303. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 17, at 10:15 a.m. at the DeLegge Funeral Home, followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Adalbert. Interment will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Rotterdam, NY. Contributions can be made in Ken’s the American Cancer Society.
