William McCann Jr. Obituary

William F. McCann Jr., 68, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 15, 2018, after a long illness.

Bill was the loving son of William F. and Lillian R. (Renzi) McCann, brother of Karen (Altman) McCann, and the proud father of Kaley and Will, all of Niskayuna. Bill was predeceased by his son Ryan, his father, and his brother-in-law Jeff. He will be greatly missed by countless friends and several generations of loving cousins.

Billy met life with a smile. He had a rare comfort and ease with strangers and friends alike. His bright blue eyes were forever hinting at excitement, and he was always ready to tell a great story, waiting to recount an adventure from his youth, share a favorite hunting or fishing memory, or talk proudly of his children’s accomplishments.

Bill graduated from Niskayuna High School and Plattsburgh State University.  He originally volunteered as a firefighter in Niskayuna before joining the Schenectady Firefighters Association and becoming a Professional Firefighter and EMT for the City of Schenectady. His love for cooking prompted his colleagues to urge him to become the designated chef at the firehouse. Throughout his career, which he thoroughly loved, he developed many meaningful and lifelong friendships. He retired in 2004 after 26 years of dedicated service.

Bill was an exceptional individual who was always willing to embrace a challenge. He truly appreciated life and all its adventures, creating many of his own along the way. Bill had a very quick wit and an analytical mind. To the amazement of his family he was able to solve Cryptoquote and Sudoku Puzzles daily with incredible speed. An outdoor enthusiast, he was a hunter, fisherman, boater, and golfer. He was also an ardent sports fan, especially passionate about the NY Giants. He had incredible knowledge of players, stats, and strategic plays throughout the years. He never missed a game and often travelled to Giants stadium to watch his favorite team.

To Billy there were no strangers; only friends he hadn’t met.
